For some people, food is a form of artistic expression. Cakes, in particular, provide an unconventional canvas from which creative bakers can create edible sculptures. Lauren Wodnicki, alias Lauren loves cake, creates sweets that are as beautiful as they are tasty. Inspired by crafts like macrame and weaving, she uses buttercream to create a range of amazing desserts. When finished, they look like tapestries with intricate knots and even beads.
Wodnicki got interested in cake decorating after deciding she would bake the cake for her wedding eight years ago. “Our wedding cake was my first attempt at a decorated cake, and a tiered cake,” she told My Modern Met. “It was four levels and, looking back, very simply decorated. But it was a great success at the time!
From there, Wodnicki honed her decorating skills and discovered styles that “really” fascinate her. Texture is of major interest to her. “I love the texture and dimension of the knit / woven / macrame patterns on a cake,” she shares. “I’m certainly not the first decorator to put some sort of fiber art decoration on a cake, but I think I’ve become my own style and my color palettes make my designs unique. All my designs are piped (using bags and nozzles) in buttercream. “
Wodnicki developed his profession while working full time in the health sector and taking care of two small children. “Let’s just say my cake / creation time is usually between 11pm and 2am.”
With the growth of her online community, Wodnicki shares her approach to cake decorating through online courses. Discover it website to download a pre-recorded lesson on making buttercream flowers.
