The Halloween season in the fall offers so many opportunities for creativity – make your spooky or friendly ghosts like Casper. Make your house twisted, scary or haunted. Give your witch a wart or striped stockings or a tall pointed black hat. Make your Jack-O-Lantern scream or smile.

Here’s a look at some fall-themed art classes that let kids sculpt from clay, paint in acrylics, or build houses from paper towel rolls and cardboard. Many are Halloween themed, others are not:

Get spooky

At Mini Monet in Sayville, from 6 to 8 p.m. on October 15, it’s a family painting evening for ages 8 and up. Participants will each paint a cat on a pumpkin using phosphorescent paint. The cost is $30 per person. From noon to 1:30 p.m. on October 23, children in grades two and up can create a spooky cardboard haunted house and decorate it with Halloween items. The cost is $35 per child. Advance registration is required for both and space is limited due to COVID, says owner Pam Brewer. Mini Monet also offers a self-service workshop for ceramics and wood carving from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays. 122 and 128 Main St., 631-218-9797,

Decorate a Planter or Pet Bowl

A family workshop at the Westbury Arts Center offers the chance to paint a planter pot for a home or garden from 3-4.30pm on October 16. Participants will learn painting techniques and work with rhinestones. The class includes information on which flowers to place in the planter to attract butterflies and birds. Open to all ages and skill levels, but children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult. The cost is $35 per person, all equipment is provided. From 3-4:30 p.m. on November 13, another event offers the chance to paint a food or water bowl for Fido or Fluffy with dishwasher-safe paint, also for $35 per person. Take the bowl home or donate it to an animal shelter. Register for either event at 255 Schenck Avenue, 516-400-2787,

paint in the park

Children gather at Veterans Park in Rocky Point for these outdoor painting sessions affiliated with Studio E Art. From 5 to 6 p.m. on October 20, children will paint a cat perched on a pumpkin, and from 5 to 6 p.m. on October 27, they will paint the legs of a witch in striped stockings emerging from a cauldron. Parents provide a blanket or towel while the kids sit on the grass, and they stay back while their kids create an 11×17 painting using acrylic paint. For ages 5 to 12; the cost is $25 per child with supplies included. To register, email instructor Jessica Avidor at The park is behind Tilda’s Bake Shop at 640 NY-25A; the studio is at 77 Broadway. 631-744-4001,

Make a clay sculpture

At the Village Artist in Huntington from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on October 16, participants paint a nighttime Halloween scene. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on October 23, instructors take participants step-by-step to sculpt spooky ghosts, haunted houses, or spooky witches from clay. The workshops are aimed at children aged 6 to 10; $45 per person. 630 New York Avenue, 631-271-0715,

Immerse yourself in Dracula

At the Tiny Artist in Massapequa, from 1 to 3 p.m. on October 16, kids create a haunted house using paper towels, toilet paper rolls and string lights to light up the interior. The cost is $30 per child. From 1 to 3 p.m. on October 23, children will paint Dracula and from 1 to 3 p.m. on October 30, they will paint a haunted house. The cost of painting sessions is $25 per person; for a parent/child experience, the cost is $40 and each person paints their own picture. Mandatory masks. 129 New York Avenue, 516-799-6930,

Learn the basics

If you are new to knitting and crochet, there are many educational resources on the Internet.

Crochet projects are done with a single crochet and can be faster than knitting. Knitting, on the other hand, uses two needles. While not difficult to learn, knitting is generally the more complicated of the two crafts. You will want to learn the basic knitting stitch as well as the cast-on. This helpful video explains the basics of knitting even for absolute beginners. Purl stitch, which is another basic knitting technique, can also be learned through video tutorials.

Knitting needles and hooks come in different sizes. This has an impact on the stitch size and the tightness (or loss) of the weave of your work. Bigger needles create a looser knit. Be sure to follow the template requirements.

Although they use different tools, the same yarn considerations should be taken into account for knitting and crochet. The wire is available in strands of different widths. The thickness of the thread may seem like a small detail, but it can have a huge impact on the number of stitches and the size of your final product. When reading a knitting or crochet pattern, be sure to note the gauge of the yarn needed.
