HONG KONG, May 19, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Polytechnic University of Hong Kong (PolyU) has won three prestigious global innovation awards in artificial intelligence (AI), materials science and biotechnology at TechConnect World Innovation Conference and Expo 2022 (TechConnect) – the world’s largest multi-industry event to foster the development and commercialization of innovations.
This is the sixth consecutive year that PolyU research teams have won the most prestigious awards among the best innovators, and PolyU is the only higher education institution in hong kong to be honored with the awards this year.
PolyU’s award-winning innovations include an AI-based chest X-ray imaging technique for clinical applications and a temperature-controlled automatic mask. They are dedicated to improving medical diagnosis or bringing greater comfort to people’s daily protection during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The other popular PolyU innovation is a new type of moisture-absorbing and sweat-wicking fabric that is more environmentally friendly. The three inventions are among 70 technologies awarded by leading institutions around the world such as US National Laboratories and other leading universities.
Teacher Christopher ChaoVice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyUsaid, “The University is delighted that our research teams continue to bring top-quality, award-winning technologies to the world and have been recognized at this global event for the sixth consecutive year. PolyU has undertaken various strategic initiatives to build a strong I&T ecosystem. , cultivating strong fundamental knowledge and fostering innovative mindsets to stimulate and drive new research.”
During the TechConnect World Innovation Conference & Expo to be held at washington d.c. from June 13 to 15, a PolyU delegation will present many innovative projects. Teacher larry chowDirector of Research and Innovation at PolyUsaid, “TechConnect has been connecting the world’s best applied research and first innovations from academia to industry for more than 20 years. It has become a forward-looking technology platform that supports global science and technology initiatives and opens up many partnership opportunities. . The PolyU delegation will meet with technology companies for potential collaborations.”
The details of PolyU’s three winning innovations are as follows:
Quantitative Analysis of Chest X-rays and AI-Assisted CT Scans for the Management of COVID-19 Patients (Teacher. Jing CAI, Department of Health Technology and Information Technology)
AI-enhanced techniques for clinical applications of COVID-19 provide accurate and inexpensive imaging solutions for diagnosis, severity stratification, and prognosis of COVID-19. These applications include AI-assisted chest X-ray imaging, AI-assisted COVID-19 disease segmentation, and multi-view analysis. Their wide accessibility will benefit developing countries that lack the resources to accurately diagnose and monitor COVID-19.
Multi-layer polylactic acid fabric and manufacturing technology absorbs moisture and releases sweat (Prof. Hong HU, Institute of Textiles and Clothing)
The new fabric differs from existing moisture-wicking fabric technology in that its manufacturing technique is simpler, cheaper and more environmentally friendly. Using double weft knitting technology, it only takes one manufacturing process to produce the new fabric structure with improved moisture wicking and sweat releasing properties. It also has inherent biological resistance and is ideal for use in school uniforms and sportswear.
Omni-Cool-Breath: an air-conditioned intelligent mask (Dr Dahua SHOU, professor Jintu FAN and Dr. HUANG Guanghan, Institute of Textiles and Clothing)
Omni-Cool-Breath is the first automatic temperature-controlled mask that provides revolutionary access to all-day fresh breath and thermal comfort in a variety of activities and thermal conditions. It reduces temperature by 12°C and humidity by 65% under low voltage via an innovative miniature thermoelectric cooling system. The lightweight, ergonomically designed mask uses biodegradable, skin-friendly 3D printing materials that allow the user to enjoy nine hours of clean air.
