Fairfax County special education instructor dies at 28; a friend remembers him

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. (DC News Now) – Tragedy struck a family in Virginia over the weekend, as a 28-year-old man died of a fall and a head injury .

Kevin Iglesias worked with special education children at Glasgow Middle School in Fairfax County, and one of his longest friends shared more about him in an interview with DC News Now.

His friend, Abby Ponce, said everyone can learn from him. She said Iglesias loved the children he worked with more than anyone and believed his story could inspire.

“I think the first thing that comes to mind is how important it is to really care and love everyone around you,” she said, looking at old photos of university of them both.

Ponce has known Iglesias since they were kids, and now she remembers him as a really good person.

“I could see his heart really change over the years,” she said.

During the interview, Ponce couldn’t help but smile while telling stories and reflecting on Iglesias’ life. She said he lived to help others, the best example being his work in the classroom.

In 2019, the Fairfax County Special Education PTA (SEPTA) awarded him Outstanding Support Staff.

“I think what I always remember is that Kevin always carried the letters, the pictures that the kids drew him,” she said. “It’s always been with him. So his wallet always seemed very thick.

Ponce said it had been difficult for Iglesias’ family, but she wanted her story to help everyone heal – so her loss doesn’t just leave memories, but a lasting impression.

“These kids really need instructors who aren’t halfway there, but really, instructors who will put their full time and effort into it,” she said. “That’s exactly what he did.

When asked how she would remember Iglesias, Ponce said it would be her “big heart” and how he saw the “beauty” and “positivity” in every day.
