Tonia joined morning show hosts Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur and showed how to make awesome DIY paper poppies.
“It’s very much a theme for decorating, creating and celebrating this month because there’s not much you can do (in terms of crafts) that doesn’t involve making the nicer house or being creative,” Todman explained.
If you recreate your own version of these DIY paper flowers and upload them to Instagram with #makeitwithspotlight, you could win a $250 Spotlight voucher.
How to make paper flowers
What you will need:
Step 1 – Take crepe paper in the color of your choice and cut out six petal shapes, all about the same size. These can be any size depending on how big you want the finished flower to be.
Step 2 – Working on one petal at a time, manipulate the crepe paper by pressing your thumbs on the paper to stretch and curve it into different shapes to create realistic flower petals.
Step 3 – Cut a 10cm x 10cm square from the black crepe paper and place two x pom poms in the centre. Wrap the paper around the pom poms to create an ice cream shape, then push one of the stem threads into the center to create the flower stem. Then wrap the fine gauge wire around the base several times to secure the rod and the black crepe paper in place.
Step 4 – Fold a long piece of black crepe paper in half lengthwise so that it measures approximately 5cm wide and 50cm long. Using the craft scissors, cut down the middle of the crepe paper, but being careful not to cut through the fold. Continue cutting every 5mm or so to create a long fringe.
Step 5 – Wrap the fringed crepe paper around the center of your flower about 3 times and trim the excess near the base. Again, use the fine gauge wire to wrap tightly all the way around and secure it in place.
Step 6 – Next, breathe warm air into your hand and place your hand on the fringed paper to crush it and create a realistic flower. You can also hold the fringed crepe paper over the steamer of a kettle to achieve the same result.
Step 7 – Now it’s time to add your petals. Take one of the petals and bend the base of it and hold it next to the stem and secure it in place with the fine gauge wire. Continue adding petals, spacing them evenly as you go and wrap them in yarn until all the petals are added. Cut the yarn when you’re done.
Step 8 – Finally, cut a rectangle of green crepe paper about 10cm long by 3cm wide and wrap it tightly around the base of the flower, working down the stem. Repeat this process to create a beautiful bouquet of crepe paper flowers!
