What is Tunisian Knitting?

This ancient craft is a combination of knitting and crochet. It uses just one hook but has stitches on this hook like knitting. Since we are knitters we abandoned traditional cast on method and used the Long Tail cast on. The great thing about Tunisian Knitting is that it's quick and easy to learn and working with two colors is easier than with one.

It's a craft with a long history and many names: Tunisian crochet, Tunisian knitting, Shepherd's knitting, Scottish knitting, Irish crochet, Hook knitting, Tunisian crochet, or Afghan stitch.

Who should try it?

Why everyone (of course)! We think this is the perfect first project for young crafters. We've taught 8 to 10 year olds in less than an hour. In order to make it easy we've included step by step photo instructions with your pattern.

Why we love it!

First we love learning something new. We've gone with the traditional Tunisian Knitting gauge because we love the woven look. It's doesn't look knit and it doesn't look crochet either and both right side and wrong sides are interesting. Even better, it is easier to 'knit' with two or three colors than it is with just one.

We've used it in several projects including scarves for him or her, pillows and even a bath mat.
