What makes a good baby yarn?

We're pretty picky about our yarns around here and that goes double for baby yarns. Our top three favorites are the Karabella Aurora 8, Cascade Pima Tencel and DiVe Zenith. All have fabulous colors, are a delight to knit with, super soft to wear and are machine washable*.

We think Pima Tencel is a great light weight alternative for babies in all climates. Babies are often so bundled up they don't really need another warm layer and the price point is fabulous at only $5 US a ball.
* We have washed all these yarns in the machine but in a mesh lingerie bag, on gentle with cold water and gentle soap. We use Kookaburra. After a personal mishap (OK, disaster) with a lovely painstakingly knit blanket for a friend who threw her blanket into the regular washer and drier with the rest of the baby things we started including "How to Care for your Hand Knit Gift" cards in our projects.
